After the dreadful experience of the second world war for those with political responsibility in the town, the idea of European reconciliation was one of the first and most important concerns.
As early as 1958 there was the first twinning with
Hitchin , a town in North Hertfordshire.
Two years later came the partnership between Rheinland-Pfalz and Burgund, which was a significant twinning with the wine metropolis
Nuits-Saint-Georges on the Côte d’Or, well-known for its Cassis.
In the course of the reform of the administration the suburb of Bingerbrück became part of the town and brought with it the partnership with Venarey-les-Laumes.
The partnership with Prizren in Kosovo, in former Yugoslavia, is unique in Germany, and the relationship came from intensive wine trading through a wine company in Bingen.
The partnerships are intensive and lively, but the partnership with Prizren is somewhat difficult because of the current political situation.
