In Rheinland-Pfalz, our German state, 4,060,000 people are living, of whom more than a million are 60 years old or more. The proportion of senior citizens will increase from the present 25 per cent to 33.9 per cent in 2030. Women who are 70 years old have an average life expectancy of a further 15 years. Men can look forward to 12 more years. Those at a ripe old age, i.e. those who are 80 or older, will increase from the present 184,000 (4.6%) to about 250,000 (6.8%).
Ignoring the statistical prognoses, older people are a very heterogeneous group in the population, with widely differing interests and needs. The period of old age can cover more than 30 years.
(Source: www.masfg.rlp.de – Internet pages of the ministry for work, community, health, family and women in Rheinland-Pfalz) These figures clearly show the significance of this group in the population, whose needs are also catered for in Bingen through intensive senior-citizens work.
