It is impossible to imagine the history of Bingen without Saint Hildegard. She was an expert in nature and healing practices, and the abbess has left us musical and literary works of spiritual
excellence. She has been described as a universal genius and is highly valued by people because of her visions. She was critical of the time in which she lived and her political ideas were highly esteemed by the pope, the emperor and bishops. Hildegard’s knowledge and teachings have lost none of their validity and fascination even after 800 years.

In what was in the Middle Ages a long life,
Hildegard (1098-1179) had enormous
influence on Disibodenberg, Rupertsberg
and Elbingen. The most fruitful decades in
her life are associated with the Rupertsberg in Bingen. At the age of eight, Hildegard was placed in the care of Jutta von Sponheim in the Disibodenberg convent, where she was taught and where the picturesque biblical world developed her theology. Between 1147 and 1150 Hildegard left the Disibodenberg convent with about twenty of her fellow nuns and created her own first convent, the Rupertsberg convent, above the grave of Saint Rupertus (Bingen-Bingerbrück). Hildegard lived and worked at the convent until her death in 1179.

With our tour guide you visit the places where Saint Hildegard worked, starting with a visit to her birthplace in Bermersheim and the convent ruins in Disibodenberg, where you can get to know the important places she worked in Bingen and the St Hildegard convent.

On this path, especially children get to know the wood from a different perspective: with the assistance of the Waldmaus (forest mouse) the wood becomes alive and many questions are
answered, such as how far a squirrel can jump. Those are only two of the experiences as you walk along the path. But adults will almost certainly also discover new aspects of the role people play in Mother Nature’s lifecycle.

Takes about 2½ hours
Length: 5½km
Group size: 10-30 people
Adults: 80 euros
School classes: 40 euros
Kindergardens: 15 euros
