It is in the St Martin’s basilica that you get an insight into the great history of Bingen. Please remember that the Romans built a temple on exactly on this site in the years before Jesus’s birth. The basilica was first mentioned in 793 in a list of gifts of the Abtei (abbey) in Lorsch. In 883 the Roman building was destroyed and was rebuilt and dedicated in 1220. When fire broke out on 14 August 1403, the whole church was raised to the ground.
13 years later a new St Martin’s church was built in Gothic style. As St Martin’s was a collegiate church it was turned into a building for the congregation in

1505. Afterwards the church experienced many building changes. The altars and artistic treasures were lost or sold.

On 1 April 1930 Pope Pius XI awarded the church the title of a papal basilica. After the bombing in 1944 the vaulted roof of the main nave and a part of the high altar collapsed.

A place of worship of special beauty awaits the visitor.
